Now that I am three weeks into serving the front lines, I can honestly say that Carrington prepared me well with not only dedicated staff, but the skills needed to perform all the necessary duties of a successful MA. Pursuing a career in the medical field only seemed fitting for someone who enjoys interacting and helping people, but also giving back to the community that once helped give me life.

Failure was not an option. I saw the program as an investment in my future, and I didn’t want to mess up the opportunity. If someone had told me two years ago I’d end up being the program valedictorian, I wouldn’t have believed it. But here we are. In the end, my self-doubt helped fuel my desire to succeed.

Completing my MA program was the first step. Enrolling in Carrington’s RN program will be my next step. I don’t know exactly when that’s going to happen, but I know it will.

My externship is where I was able to start applying in a real-world setting what I’d learned in class. Last month, at the end of my five-week externship, Sierra offered me a full-time job. I was thrilled—and I was also grateful to be able to give notice at the tire store. I really feel like my hard work and commitment have paid off, and that the program has provided a fast track to a new career.

Carrington did such an amazing job with all of their clinicals and hands-on experience that I had more clinical hours in my two-year degree than was required… and what equivalent nursing programs in the UK offer in three years!

I have learned so much! The knowledge I have now is just monumental compared to what I knew before. I’ve learned the concepts of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. The different dosage formulations and the routes of administration, as well as the key terms that are spoken in the pharmacy. I also learned and came to understand the importance of medication errors. Medical terminology and abbreviations used in writing out SIGs have also been important. Then there is pharmacy law, which I now have a basic knowledge of and never knew I would need to know.

There is no way I would’ve been able to get through school alone, but I had an amazing support system through my family and my classmates. My classmates and teacher were always jumping into action to do anything they could to make sure I was able to make it to school and help with studying.

Each teacher has their own way of teaching. You get all these different views of knowledge and a range of different experiences in the hands-on labs. I loved that. That experience set me up for my externship.

When asked if he plans on sticking with ST, he says, “It feels like this is the one. I’m going to stay with this one for a very long time. I can see eventually maybe becoming a Surgical First Assistant, but I already have better job security now. I have more options, more doors.” And he is very clear about his purpose in health care, “We are there as part of a team to make a difference in a patient’s life.
